The shuttles presented below all have a tapered edge, and the lengths range from 7-inches (175mm) up to 22-inches(560mm). The common factor is they all have the same profiled blade edge for beating. We try to have at least two wood varieties available, with some displaying good figure and others not so much.
We acknowledge that our shuttles are priced higher than the shuttles available elsewhere, and there are very good reasons for this. A primary one is that weavers create many beautiful items; we happen to think weavers also deserve beautiful tools. We use high-value furniture-grade woods in all our shuttles.
The next is these are hand sanded and finished. This ensures no catch points or snags that an unfinished shuttle can have. The selection presented below includes some heavily figured woods and these are hand polished as it presents the wood grain figure in such a wonderful way. Yes, you could be pragmatic and purchase a plain unfinished timber shuttle elsewhere, and it will function perfectly well (after sanding the spots that catch your weft). For many weavers this is entirely sufficient.
Our belt / inkle loom and stick shuttle range is designed for the weaver who sees weaving as an enjoyable experience where the tools used play an important pleasurable part of the weaving process; in other words, the shuttle is more than just a tool.
We have a good range of sizes, and these are listed below. The 7-inch is designed for inkle loom weaving while the 9-inch belt shuttle is suitable for inkle, table, and rigid heddle looms with small to medium width warps. The longer stick shuttles are for any loom where shed space is tight. The tapered edge allows for beating as you go.
NB: We finish most shuttles in polyurethane as this helps keep our prices lower (hand polishing is time consuming).
